Editorial: Special issue on AI/ML solutions in 5G and future networks

Abstract

The convergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) with next-generation communication networks, including 5G and the emerging 6G, is transforming the landscape of telecommunications. These technologies are redefining how networks are planned, managed, optimized, and secured, propelling the industry toward remarkable levels of performance and scalability. This special issue of the ITU Journal on Future and Evolving Technologies (ITU J-FET) captures work in this space, as well as the cutting-edge advancements showcased in the fourth edition of the ITU AI/ML in 5G Challenge. The Challenge provides a global platform for innovation, bringing together students, researchers, and professionals to address real-world challenges in this field. By promoting collaboration between academia, industry, and standards organizations, the Challenge highlights the potential of AI/ML in optimizing, securing, and scaling communication networks.

This editorial introduces the 4th special issue of ITU J-FET, dedicated to the cutting-edge research inspired by the fourth edition of the ITU AI/ML in 5G Challenge.
